Basic Grey POTM: The Cards {Life of the Party}

Wow... what a week last week was! We had a great time in our Basic Grey Page of the Month classes this week, creating a fabulous double paged layout featuring the Life of the Party collection... and what a versatile collection it is! One of my fave parts of these classes is seeing the photos the ladies choose to use on the layouts, and it's so cool to see how such a great variety of photos will work with one design! If you're taking the class and haven't added photos and journaling yet... consider this post your not-so-gentle reminder to DO IT! :) Trust me, it feels GREAT!

I've decided that this year I won't be posting on the blog our versions of the layout (you can see them in the store) but I will share with ya the bonus card I teach at each class, as well as any others I put together using the leftover pieces from our class kit. Occassionally you'll see that I've added another sheet of paper into the mix, but if you come to our POTM class (or take the class at any other store!) you should have ample supplies to make some variety of these cards at home yourself!

This first card is the one some of the ladies completed after class- the background image is one of the coordinating cling background stamps Hero Arts has teamed up with Basic Grey to do- LOVE this idea and totally think it's a match made in heaven! The focal image of this card is a sentiment by Tim Holtz which has been partially inked and completed with some of the letter stickers leftover from the layout. The blossom you see is from the new 'petals' embellishments Basic Grey is releasing for their collections and they are FAB- a combo of paper and canvas flower shapes that coordinate with the paper line. LOVE them!
Card 2 here was a quickie- I used some leftover pennant pieces (we cut A LOT of these babies out for the class, but they really are fun to use on projects!) and assorted presents I cut from another piece of paper. The '4 U' is from another of the alpha sticker sheets we used.
I had this third card finished a few days back and just waiting for a stamped image to fill the open space... I decided to use this cute chicken from Whipper Snapper today cuz it fit the space (LOL) and was quick to colour! This card will be great in my stash for one of my (many) coffee lovin' friends! I think I'll add a pocket inside to be a gift card holder...
So there they are- some quick cards using scraps from class! It feels great when you finish a scrapbooking project to whip up a card or two with leftover pieces before you put it all away, and it's a great way to build your card stash too!

p.s. TONS of new products arrived today and we'll be working on pricing it all... but I had to open up the package of new Express It Blending cardstock from Copic and use it on this image and it worked great! I look forward to trying it again with something that I'll put more than 5 minutes of effort into ;) The 12 newest colours of Copic markers are here as well as lots of pretty papers and inks and...

Happy Birthday {hang in there Becky!}

It's a good year to be turning 40- my fabulous friend Becky is joining the ranks of other Fab 40 Year Olds like Starbucks, the Vancouver Canucks and Tim Holtz. Pretty decent company if you ask me :) Still, it's a big one and I figured she needed a reminder to hang in there, so I made her this card:
... and it has this fabulous Irish blessing on the inside (since Becky's birthday is sooo close to St. Patrick's Day!):
Have a fabulous birthday, Becky! Keep hanging in there, and don't party too hard without me this weekend ;)

A Cup of Birthday Joy

My girlfriend, Joy, had her birthday (her 'umpteenth 28th' birthday) this weekend so I made her this card to brighten her day! This little cutie is holding a giant cup of hot chocolate, which would totally make Joy's day (mmmm... chocolate). Joy, if you're reading- I hope you had a delightful day and I wish you much chocolate on every day in the coming year that is not delightful in and of itself :)

I started colouring up Alice by Christy Croll (Stamping Bella) at Copic Club the other night (thanks for the tips, Cheri!) and decided to match her up with these fabulous papers by Crate Paper. I seriously can't get enough of the Restoration collection and every time I make a card with them I think it's my new favorite. These papers just make me HAPPY. My fave is the background piece with colourful doilies on it, but I was thrilled when I went to assemble this card and noticed the dot paper too- could it be more perfect with Alice? I think not! You can barely see it, but I stamped a happy birthday definition over the dots for some extra texture. This card is based on the current Friday Sketchers Sketch- love it and will probably use this layout again :) That's all for now- hope this card brings some JOY to your day, too!

Color Me Happy!

Here's a card I made just because... I wanted to play with some new papers (and a not so new stamp that hadn't been inked yet!). This card features "Annie the Artist" by Kraftin' Kimmie paired with fabulous new papers from Echo Park's "For the Record" collection. So much fun!
Annie was coloured with Copics and my card was assembled using inspiration from the current sketch by Sketch Saturday! It also fits the current challenge over at Kraftin' Kimmie's blog to use twine or floss (not exactly a hard one for me!). I modified the sketch a bit cuz I really wanted to use this cute paint palette die from QK/Lifestyle Crafts. It was a bit tricky, but I like how it turned out- especially with glossy accents over my paint to make it look wet! I pulled the photo corners out of my stash to finish it off. Hope you like it and feel inspired to create something that makes you happy!

Julie's apron (chocolate challenge)

It's a bit late getting it up on the blog, but this project was in fact completed before the end of our challenge! We've been wanting to decorate one of these canvas aprons from Prima for a while now- hopefully this will inspire you to pick one up and make it your own! Mom paired the apron with a 'layer cake' (10x10" stack) of Basic Grey's Origins fabric. She pulled primarily from the brown fabrics with a few yellows mixed in.
Here's a close up of the brown ruffle and the gathered flower. I love the addition of the yellow stitches!
Aren't these flowers fabulous? Mom wove strips of fabric together then covered the back with Sookwang tape before die cutting them with this sweet scalloped heart from Sizzix. She was then able to tape them to the apron to hold them in place before stitching them. The flower stems are felt pieces by Prima.
Hope you enjoyed! You can see the apron up close in the store. The aprons & fabric are both available in the store- as well as some great canvas bags, iron on vinyl from Silhouette... so many possibilities with canvas, fabric & die cuts!

... and the winners are...

Today is the day we get to give away some goodies! First up, we a little blog candy as we were looking for comments on our Feb. SOTM sample board (we love comments, and just might start doing some random giveaways like this... so please, spread the love!). Random.org helped us select a winner for this prize of goodies from Memory Box Stamps:
... and the winner is DOROTHY E.! Congrats Dorothy! You can pick up your stamp & paper next time you're in the store :)

And then we had the fabulous CHOCOLATE CHALLENGE! It's been so much fun looking at everyone's entries and we're thrilled to have such a diverse assortment of projects both on our creativi-tree and online! It was too complicated to use random.org for this one, so we drew names the old fashioned way... if you look close, you can see the winners name on a strip of paper photographed below with her prize!
... and the winner is NORMA S.! Norma's card featured real chocolate wrappers/padding from a Purdy's box and smelled so yummy when it arrived in the store :) Congrats Norma, this assortment of chocolatey goodies is for you- and yep, it includes one of my cake boxes, filled with Hershey's Kisses :)

Thanks to all for playing! We're going to aim for bimonthly challenges, so the next one will be sometime in April! If you haven't yet, check out all the entries in the store before they are claimed by their owners! Good stuff!

March Stamp of the Month: High Hopes!

It's a new month, which means we've got a new Stamp of the Month for y'all to check out! We're thrilled to be introducing a new stamp company to our store- High Hopes! Our SOTM is the adorable "frog in boxers" which I totally fell in love with a while back when Tanya created a card with him. SOTM members have the option to purchase the coordinating Irish Blessing sentiment, which totally cracks me up (you'll see it on Teila's card, below). Our DT member, Teila, helped me out with our samples this month. Before you take a closer look at the cards, let me offer you this blessing ;)

May the light always find you on a dreary day.
When you need to be home, may you find your way.
May you always have courage to take a chance.
And may you never find frogs in your underpants!

All our cards this month feature the 'Family Keepsake' collection by We R Memory Keepers. I know Teila had a hard time working with it, but I had a ball with the fun colours and patterns! It's very springy :)

This first card was a lot of fun- I paper pieced the boxers and layered my frog in front & behind them. I hung the boxers on a length of string which I 'hung' from two buttons (which mom graciously threaded for me). These cute mini clothespins were in our stash. This card is in honour of a girlfriend's upcoming 40th birthday... I actually made another version of the same card to give to her, but I'll share a picture of that one with ya closer to her birthday :) This card has fun dimension to it, which you can check out in person next time you're in the store.
I have to say that I absolutely loved colouring this frog- I tried him in several different green combo's with my Copic markers and had fun adding texture with my blender pen. This next card is pretty simple, but I got to use some new toys on it... my main image is layered onto the smallest shape from a set of GRAND nestabilities and the sentiment is stamped on a new banner shape from Lifestyle Crafts/QuicKutz. The paper flower was formed from a Sizzix die :) I added a touch of colour to the small white flowers with a Copic marker to match them perfectly with the boxer shorts.
These final two cards were created by Teila- you can find out more details about them on her blog in the near future! This first one features the coordinating Irish Blessing sentiment- love it!

We hope you like the new stamp! It's always fun featuring a new stamp company like this :) We do have an assortment of other High Hopes stamps in the store, and if you're a SOTM member who picks up their stamp by the 15th of the month, you can get them for 20% off! (You can see what our DT member, Janet has been doing with her new High Hopes stamps on her blog!)
